Teaching Kids the ABCs of Toilet Flushing Etiquette

Kids love putting things in the toilet, and they love flushing the toilet. Here at Enkay Plumbing we've seen our fair share of blocked pipes and backed-up toilets, and we really do believe prevention is key.

Let's go through what we can teach our kids about what should and shouldn't be flushed down the toilet.

  1. The Golden Rule: Only Flush the Three Ps: Let's keep it simple: pee, poo, and toilet paper. These are the only things that should ever be flushed. Anything else, like wipes, cotton balls, or toys (yes, it happens), should go straight into the bin.

  2. Wipes: While they might claim to be "flushable," they're definitely not. More like a plumbers nightmare! Teach your kids that even if a wipe disappears down the drain, it can wreak havoc on your plumbing system in the future. Stick to good old toilet paper and save yourself a headache.

  3. The Flush-and-Wait Technique: After flushing, wait a few seconds before leaving the bathroom. Sometimes, things might seem fine at first, only to discover a slow drain or an impending overflow. By waiting a moment and ensuring everything goes down smoothly, you can prevent potential disasters.

  4. Lead by Example: Kids are sponges; they soak up everything they see and hear. So, if they see you treating the toilet with care and respect, they're more likely to follow suit.

By instilling these lessons early on, we're promoting responsible plumbing habits and also setting our kids up for success in the long run - win win!

So, what do you do if something does block the toilet? Give the friendly team at Enkay Plumbing a call and we'll be able to resolve the issue for you.

Happy Flushing!
